I do feel for you - I was in exactly the same position as you as I also have a young child and all my working life I've been juggling the demands of motherhood and career. At my university no one else had a small child at the time I did (several do, now) and so I just kept quiet about him because it wasn't done to mention the difficulties I might be having. I've got my fingers crossed you get that contract renewed, and no I don't think it will hurt a bit to remind the authorities they need to deal with it.
