Is Oxford on Al Gore’s itinerary?

By skepticlawyer

Inquiring minds want to know.

Woke up this morning for a spot of early morning study, to be greeted by the scene over the fold.

More pics to follow on Facebook - the lovely historic buildings do look impressive dressed in white. This shot was taken out of my window.

UPDATE: A public Facebook photo album is available here.

You’ll be happy to know SL that the consensus view, as judged by the number of google hits, is that 2008 and will be colder than 2007.

Are you feeling the possibility of a recession over there? Finance pundits are saying it’s a certainty as house prices are coming down fast.

  7. Posted April 6, 2008 at 8:51 pm | Permalink

That’s the word. Prices have started to drop up north, but it hasn’t hit the areas around London yet. One thing keeping prices up locally is the whole ‘green belts’ policy that’s been big in the UK for God knows how long.

The Oxford version is based around the fact that the older colleges own most of the land, so land only gets released when it suits the colleges (ie they need cash to endow scholarships or fellowships).

However even allowing for the green belts issue, prices have stopped rising. There’s a guy at the Adam Smith Institute who reckons the arse will really fall out of house prices once the boomers all start downshifting. Apparently housing over here is stratified generationally in a way that would seem ridiculous to an Australian, where people of all ages and backgrounds own property.

Don’t want him over there at the moment, SL. Europe is a little short on food, such as grains at the moment. With his appetite he tip the scales and cause food riots across the entire region.

Don’t know about Gore, but Rudd was in England where he apparently chaired a session on climate change… so I’d say it’s Rudd who made it snow.

Rudd needs to be careful, he may well be on a tangent to nowhere (in sailing terms its “LTO” - lightning tack to oblivion).

I dunno how much face he lost with his “salute,” it could come back and haunt him.

Dontcha feel relaxed that the country is in his hands?

And snow all over London too…but none in Cambridge strangely.

  13. Posted April 8, 2008 at 2:38 am | Permalink

And Cambridge is usually colder than Oxford, too, being Fen country and all.

I think Rudd has been a class act so far, FDB. Like any PM he ought to stay overseas as long as he can so that he doesn’t get any ideas about governing.

I vote for an absent PM.

How people queue to hear him speak i don’t know. I much rather watch paint dry on a desert island with GMB

“the consensus view, as judged by the number of google hits, is that 2008 and will be colder than 2007″

They’re just hedging their bets so that if it gets colder they can say, “see - we were right on with our trends” and if it turns out warmer - or even the same as 2007 - they can say, “Ooh… even warmer than we expected”.

…as always wiki to the rescue

“In British English, a term referring to Cambridge students, used primordially by members of Oxford University”

No. My student days are behind me. I just visit Cambridge because my parents live there.

Is there slang for someone who went to UNSW? (awaits jokes and horrible insults about UNSW students)

  22. Posted April 8, 2008 at 9:33 pm | Permalink

Not that I know of, but UNSW has the same colours (black and gold) as my college This fact has been noted by a couple of UNSW people around these parts ;)

Maybe there should be a Catallaxy meet for those of us in the UK?

Next time everyone is in London we should have a pint.

  24. Posted April 8, 2008 at 11:26 pm | Permalink

Good idea. There are two UNSW people in my staircase who lurk on this blog, and one USyd guy… I’m thinking Summer VIIIs would be good, too. Brendan, Timothy and DEM are also in the UK.

Only thing is two of us are rowing for VIIIs, which could be awkward.
