As food prices soar around the world, apparently one group (deservedly) losing out is Afghanistan’s Taliban. Local farmers prefer to grow wheat these days – there’s more profit in it for them. Opium profits helped to fund the Taliban – so much so, they’re still trying to lever farmers to keep growing it. Without the money, the Talibs have got themselves rather rogered.
I’m sure there’s a term in economics for this, but buggered if I know what it is.

Silver lining to every cloud! Suffer Taliban.
I’ve heard comments that the rocketing food prices make Europeans dummies for their resistance to genetically modified crops. But don’t they also make organic food prices better value for money?
