Yes LE you are correct, but finding an alternative way of billing can be hard and the bigger the firm the geater the incentive to standardise. I look forward to your billing post.

Well, lawyers love being critical in general - so it's natural to turn it on ourselves in the process - only seems fair!

The thing is that there's a massive turnover in law firms, particularly at the first, second and third year levels, but there's so many hungry young graduates coming up that it doesn't matter...plenty more cannon fodder coming up through the universities. Makes me cross - seems like an awfully short-sighted way of treating staff really. Also, importantly, I don't think the way in which law firms presently operate necessarily delivers the best results to the client or society in general.

One of things that fascinates me about lawyers is that they're the only profession who seem to be conctantly engaged in criticism of themselves.

At least some of you.

Ah, it would be diverting work to another firm though - couldn't sue one's own firm for overcharging... I'm planning a big post on law firm billing. One of my friends alerted me to the fact that my old blog got cited in a Melbourne Uni study of how law firms bill!

Yeah, it's a real crock - effectively putting on your bills "By the way, you can sue me if you don't like this bill"...

I don't know about other states but in Victoria we have to make the usual cost disclosure...but unlike the plumber or electrian etc. who probabaly charge more per hour they don't have "Even if you agreed to pay these costs, guess what you can complain and waste my time answering to LIV if you complain so I lose my margin" GMAFB!

Yes there are an awful lot of lawyers in Parliament. Actually, I'd like to see a breakdown of what the various professions of MPs were (before they became pollies). I'm sure someone's got one somewhere.

I do agree with you that the tax laws are in dire need of reform. They just get more and more complicated every year, with more and more "exemptions" and "bonuses" - the cost of administering all this must be massive - much easier to have a simpler system where there are far less administration costs and people pay less tax in the first place, rather than having to wait for bonuses, rebates, exemptions and the like.

But I guess governments like taking a lot of tax from us - they can effectively borrow the money for that time, even if they have to pay some of that money back to us at tax time.
