WordPress is still half-baked junk

By Jacques Chester

Normally-invisible Jacques here.

Those of you who know me know that I regularly complain about WordPress. In their rush to add ever more features and introduce new-shineys, the developers of WordPress generally can’t be arsed to close old bugs, write proper tests or confirm that their software isn’t lame rubbish.

Latest pet peeve: version 2.8 doesn’t correctly upgrade via SVN switching. In technical terms that means they’ve just made my life harder. Thanks a freaking lot guys, just what I want in my final semester.

I fully expect that Matt Mullenweg will swoosh into this thread on the back of a Google Alerts email. If you’re reading this, Matt, take some of the millions of dollars of funding you managed to raise for Automattic, hire some boring-personality engineers and close some goddamned bugs, write some goddamned tests and pretend that you’re a software engineer rather than a bloody 50s beatnik. I am sick and tired of cleaning up behind WordPress.

Maybe … I’m playing footsie with the idea of doing honours. My professors and family are pretty keen on it.

I wouldn’t trust academic opinion on things like that — everyone is keen on honors students in comp sci., since there are generally very few of them. Since 4th year in comp sci. probably won’t help your salary or employability much, I would only do it if you are really interested in looking at a particular topic for a year (I imagine you are probably already high on employability given you can run servers, fix code, think about businesses to start up, write good English etc.). That’s coming from someone who has worked in a comp sci. department and has done 4th year in comp sci. (I did mine on stuff to do with text-processing, but that’s because I’m interested in language-stuff). Alternatively, if you were in the social sciences, I’d recommend the opposite. If you do it, make sure you get a good supervisor for your thesis who isn’t too busy. I reckon really good younger guys are the best in this respect, since the older really good guys are usually inundated with stuff and have very little time to help the army of students they usually have (the way students are attracted to supervisors is very non-linear — a few guys tend to attract large numbers of students, but then don’t have time for any of them). I’m not sure what CDU is like, but it might not be simple to find someone really good up there. I’m sure places like UWA would be better in this respect.

Conrad @ 3 I suppose you’re using ‘guys’ in its generic, gang of academics sense. :) Lots of women in comp sci, at least where I work.
