Peter:

Rather than grouping people in racial terms it would be better to look at them as individuals. Your comment borders on fascism as it suggests people, in this case a racial group should have done more for the Australian community- towing the line.

A janitor that happens to be Lebanese would be doing a worthy job, sunshine.

It's no wonder Trad had a massive falling out with the Lebanese Muslim Association, because he wouldn't have done much for their image. But you can't take him as representative of Lebanese Australians. I think many Lebanese Australians would reject that wholeheartedly.

Of course, the Lebanese all have different religions too (eg, Marionite Christian, Druze, Muslim etc etc), so it's hard to pick one figure or one tradition which is representative.

The Lebanese actually have a long history in this country. They've been in Australia for a long time (since 1880s). There are a number of prominent Lebanese Australians. The former Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks, is of Lebanese background, for example. And the author David Malouf is also of Lebanese background. I'm sure there's more. I went to uni with a very clever and pleasant Lebanese lady who spoke multiple languages and had numerous degrees.

Looks like he'll be staying in the news after this...

Australian police have arrested four people in the southern city of Melbourne after uncovering what they say was a plot to launch an attack. The group was preparing a suicide attack on an army base, police said.

More than 400 officers were involved in searching 19 properties across the city before dawn on Tuesday. The suspects include Australian nationals of Somali and Lebanese descent, and those arrested are due to appear in court later in the day.
