Vilu Riff: Celebrant Didi drops resort in doodoo

By DeusExMacintosh

Police in the Maldives are to launch an investigation after a foreign couple who thought they were renewing marriage vows were in fact being subjected to a torrent of abuse. A video has emerged of the unidentified Western couple taking part in the ceremony at the Vilu Reef resort.

Instead of words of blessing, the celebrant calls the couple “swine” and “infidels” in the local language.

The hotel has apologised for the “unforgivable conduct” of its staff. “The management of the resort is deeply saddened by this humiliating event,” the hotel said in a statement.

The Maldives’ Deputy Tourism Minister, Ismail Yasir, told the BBC the government was “very concerned” by the incident. “We have asked the resort to inform us what action they have taken. We have also requested a formal inquiry into the matter from the police,” he said.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Shaheed said the incident could damage the country’s reputation as a tourist haven.

The amateur film of the ceremony, posted on the video sharing website Youtube a few days ago, shows the couple sitting in a makeshift shelter on the beach, surrounded by local people. The bride is wearing a white dress and carrying a bouquet, while incense, official looking documents and wedding rings lie on the table in front of them.

The celebrant explains the ceremony in English before everyone stands and holds their hands up to pray. But instead of words of blessing, the celebrant uses the intonating style of prayers to unleash a torrent of abuse about the couple in the Dhivehi language.

“Your marriage is not a valid one. You are not the kind of people who can have a valid marriage. One of you is an infidel. The other, too, is an infidel – and we have reason to believe – an atheist, who does not even believe in an infidel religion,” the Minivan newspaper quotes him as saying…

The celebrant also makes references to bestiality, sexual diseases and “frequent fornication by homosexuals”.

After the ceremony, the couple are taken to plant a coconut tree together, during which various comments are made about the bride’s breasts.

[email protected] I was well aware it was a “dave fails classics forever” statement.

But… In my defence: exhibit A. John Brumby, Labor Party Vic Premier. Exhibit B: Petro Georgiou, Liberal Party.

DB No, you are just engaging in silly “lefty=good guy” stuff. There are plenty of very traditionalist denunciations of “vulgar commerce” for example. Indeed, Toryism specifically has quite a strain of “protecting the vulnerable”.

As the late Eric Wolf pointed out, the energy of commerce is a problem for anyone who likes a static society (though, of course, there is no society more static/about-control-for-status than one aiming for complete equality).

Indeed, the whole proletariat/bourgeois analytical division is pretty silly, and shows a compulsive desire to grade people, since the one person can be both a provider of labour and an owner of capital. And one can seen plenty of folk whose income comes mainly from their labour who vote and identify “right” and plenty of folk whose income comes mainly from capital who vote and identify as “left”.

Trying to “create” a “left” stream before the French Revolution is just a pointless exercise, because the lines of dispute just do not line up in an appropriate way. For example, it was the British Crown which was fighting to protect indigenous rights in the American Revolution–and was moving to offer freedom to slaves to undermine the American war effort.

The left-right division is even getting fairly tattered in our own time. Trying to project it across history just gets ludicrously anachronistic.

    [email protected] “intellectual sub-prime mortgages”

You anti-post-whatever lot of the rightie persuasion might enjoy a similar dumping by a group of traditional lefties (so traditional some can quote Capital and the Communist Manifesto in large slabs) on another (closed) forum.

Much hilarity, mentioned your sub-prime joke, and we are pretty much all disowning the post-whatever wankers. The following is my favorite comment by another:

“absolute rubbish for people that cannot be bothered studying real science, history, politics, or economics, micky mouse academia and busy-work for non-contributors, a plague on the universities and a demobilising philosophy”

OK, nice to know another thing that decent folk of right and left can agree on.
