This is a bit of a meme.

For a more parochial version (or at least mapping more restricted geographical areas as viewed from other more restricted areas), see here.

I’ve seen similar with a black stripe where Vietnam would be, with “Don’t Go There!” written beside it.

So we’ve been updated from ‘Kangaroos’ to ‘Racists’ ‘ey. Or is that downgraded? I used to have a lot of trouble explaining to (posh) English friends the Australian attitude to race. They were always trying to censor my use of the word ‘wog’ (never heard of Lenny Bruce).

I’m now having trouble explaining it to Afro-American friends who likewise seem to have no idea. One of ‘em was wondering if he’d be welcome in this (very boho) bar in Fitzroy on account of his complexion! I had to stifle laughter.

    Marcellous, that’s gold.

LE@6 I still remember the searing experience–having recently moved back to Sydney from Melbourne (aged 10) of referring, in my Sydney suburb, to ‘bathers’ rather than ‘swimmers’. Boy, was I mocked.

On ‘racists’, I can remember years ago, Knofles (Frank Knopfelmacher) making the cynical comment that, once apartheid collapsed, Australia would be next on the hit list. He underestimated the utility of the Jewish state as hate object.

That Nelson Mandela, during a visit to Australia, was unsympathetic to indigenous activist complaints about suffering like under apartheid, possibly did not help.

And here’s an extremely parochial map along similar lines!

I first encountered it via Jim Belshaw. It subsequently turned up on a workplace noticeboard (next to the OH&S, registered business name and Fire Warden notices).

On the positive side, Australia is the world-beater in targeting welfare to the poor. So, generous “racists”!

I find it amusing that someone making a map about racial stereotypes feels free to use the label ‘racist’.

Oh, and here’s a whole heap more maps.

It’s interesting to note how often the various stereotypers equate Germany with dodgy pr0n.

The original of the Sydney map was from the cover of UNSW’s Tharunka.

I hope this comment doesn’t get buried in this post – although the title “One View of the World” is most apt. To be even more accurate, it should have the word “Unique” in there…

This morning via snail mail I had the great pleasure of receiving a sample book illustrating the work of a very talented individual. I have worked for myself since age 23, and over the years have had to involve myself in many productions and promotions for the purposes of advancing my business. I would like to record my disappointment that this talent was not then known to me. I make no claim to discovery; rather she has discovered herself, finally promoted herself, and in doing so has demonstrated both high production and artistic skills, and acute insight.

So if any of you people reading this blog have firms or businesses in need of the services of one very fine illustrator, graphic artist, copywriter for the professional promotion of your own business, please accept these words as my honest appraisal, and complete admiration, of one Deus Ex Macintosh. Be you in Warrnambool, Washington or Wembley, you could do one positive thing for your business today by simply requesting her to provide you with the sample book I now have in front of me.

You may well think I rabbit on a bit; all I can say is I’m too old to worry about your opinion, and wise enough to recognise excellence when I see it.

Sorry – for clarification, the map is not mine and kvd had asked for a bit of help with a project for his business IRL.

Sounds like the proof was a success. :-D

There’s always the “Strange Maps” blog which is good for a gander every now and then.

But I reckon LE LOTR-fan will like http://bigthink.com/ideas/21172 which is Europe (with lower water levels) according to tolkien
