Monday Funnies

By way of background, a somewhat out-of-date but nonetheless partially current list of BNP members was leaked last week, producing several comical side-effects. First, the BNP is suing for breach of the privacy rights enshrined in the EU-inspired Human Rights Act. One of its policies is the repeal of the Human Rights Act. Second, members of groups best considered ‘civil libertarians of convenience’ – that is, they don’t support the release of sex offenders’ addresses under ‘Megan’s Law‘ arrangements – have said the list should be public. Third, it’s emerged that coppers are not allowed to be BNP members, and those coppers who turned up on the list are now facing the sack. Watching the coppers’ trade union deal with this has been, ahem, amusing.

Actually, I think the copper’s union may be the SOURCE of the problem. The BNP isn’t a legally proscribed organisation a la the IRA, it’s a genuine mainstream political party (with questionable antecedents sure, but then so has the Socialist Workers Party). I think it’s the UNIONS representing police and prison workers who’ve said membership is incompatible with the job, and you can’t get or keep the job without being in the union.

There are three wholly separate issues in play, all of which make at least one of the parties look like an utter dickhead. The BNP suing on the HRA given their policy toward same = dickhead. The civil libertarians who are rather selective about whose private details are released to the public = dickhead. The trade union unwilling to represent its own membership without fear or favour = dickhead. It’s a cock-up all round 😉
