The more things change…

The US president has said police acted “stupidly” when they arrested a black Harvard scholar outside his own home. Prof Henry Louis Gates was held last week in Cambridge, Massachusetts, home to the top university where he teaches.

Barack Obama said the US had a long history of African-Americans being disproportionately stopped by police.

Officers were called to Prof Gates’s house after a woman reported seeing two black males – the professor and his driver – trying to force entry. Although the exact facts of the incident are disputed, Prof Gates was asked to provide the officer with identification. He was then asked to step outside his house and was arrested.

Mr Obama said: “I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry.

“Number two… the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home.”

An initial disorderly conduct charge was dropped and Cambridge police called the arrest “regrettable and unfortunate”.

It’s a weird world where going out for a walk becomes a suspicious activity. Or just an excessively car-oriented one.

Dunno, DEM. When I lived in the big smoke I’d often walk alone at 3am or thereabouts in the morning, due to being a chronic insomniac. As such any police cruising by would stop and asked me what I was doing more often than not. I’m glad they did because that is their job. It is reasonable to be suspicious in such circumstances.

And like Bob Dylan but unlike the pretentious and ill-mannered professor Gates, I was exceedingly polite and accordingly never had any trouble.

ps. now when I can’t sleep I put on my cave lamp and go water the plants in the paddock. The sheep in the neighbouring paddock think I’m weird but who cares! 🙂

Fair to say, at 3am in the morning it would be suspicious but this happened around 5pm. This is obviously not a country big on the “constitutional” (which might have something to do with the obesity problem).
